Education
The CAN Council has a large variety of pamphlets
and brochures that address issues such as child safety, child abuse
awareness and prevention, child development and parenting strategies.

if you would like to receive some of our
educational materials, or set up a display at your organization.
Prevention
The CAN Council seeks to prevent child abuse and
neglect through partnerships, public relations, and offering
grant opportunities
to direct service organizations who work
one-on-one with families and children. We reach out to the public
through health fairs and community events like Kids Fest. We also
educate other social service agencies by having several of our
Board Members
serve on other boards and action
committees.
Car Seat Program
The CAN Council is known for being the only
organization in Calhoun County who tackles the immense problem of
families who are unable to afford adequate car seats for their children
by purchasing car seats and giving them free of charge to needy families
who qualify. In the past, we have partnered with the
Michigan
State Police to offer car seats to needy families
throughout the year. We have also sponsored Car Seat Safety Checks twice
a year in partnership with the MSP and
Lassen
Pontiac Buick Cadillac.
Unfortunately, budget cuts and staffing changes at
the MSP have made them unavailable to help with car seat distribution
and car seat safety checks. We are currently working with a business
partner in the community to offer a Car Seat Voucher Program, in which
needy families can purchase a car seat at a local business for $15 with
a voucher and a referral from their caseworker. Expect this program to
launch sometime in the summer or fall of 2008.
Speaker’s Bureau
The CAN Council has several board members who are available for public
speaking on such topics as Shaken Baby Syndrome, Internet Predators and
Safety, and general child abuse and prevention topics. Please
contact us if your organization would like a speaker on one
of these topics.Monthly Meetings
The CAN Council meets the second Tuesday of each month
to discuss events in the community, administrative issues, and ways to
promote the cause of child abuse prevention. These monthly meetings are
open to the public. There are several committees to address each issue
more in-depth.
